Photographing birds in perfection or is it? Up close and detailed!

I had the opportunity to go and do some up close bird photography of some interesting species last year. Yes this one is long in the making! It’s because I don’t exactly know what to think of the context I was in. Let me explain. I was at a falconer that had some birds for exhibition and some in care as a shelter. Basically they find birds from zoos, private people or otherwise that want to get rid of these birds. All in all a good thing, right?

One of my favourite animals, not birding, but just as elusive especially these days

I think the cover photo already spoiled it. My first real wildlife encounter was with foxes in the dunes. This was before I got the birding virus. The curiosity, daring and cunning behaviour of foxes always attracted me to get them photographed within their habitat as naturally as possible. This was a challenge years ago, but doable in the dunes. However lately they are more scarce. Mainly due to the more people that are photographing them, even feeding them (which is now prohibited), but I think they are hiding further and further away in the dunes as it became more and more crowed after 2020 with people.

After rain comes sunshine, finally doing some bird photography and failing

So as in most of Europe it has been absolutely pouring with rain the last months. It started in October last year and with some breaks in between of a few days it has been constantly raining. Save to say we have enough water to go through another dry summer here. Anyway last weekend was sort of oke and finally took out the OM-System 150-400F4.5 pro again as I have not been using it a lot. I have some bird shelter photos coming as well with this lens, so stay tuned.

Moving on from full frame Sony A1 goodness to OM-1 reach and versatility of m43

So this will be about my choice or rather experience with both systems using them side to side and eventually made the maybe unpopular choice. Lets discuss or let me explain because if you talk about this then there are two camps shouting to each other that full frame is better and the future, the other side will shout its all about versatility and the ability to shoot and be flexible in any shooting condition. Rather get further and get the shot than give up halfway there.

Cycling in the Mont Ventoux area and spotting vultures

A week or so ago I was on a cycling trip to get to the top of Mont Ventoux. This was one of the main goals for cycling this year, together with two others, but again injury and fitness did not get me to the first goal. So this was a must reach goal. It started off unlucky with illness and medicine. In the end I did manage to get to the top, but it took a lot of perseverance and some curse words. The reward was worth it in the end. It was a lovely (maybe too hot) of a day.

Free roaming in Hamburg with epic summer sunrise light

A few weeks ago I needed to go to Hamburg for meetings and all business stuff. However I was staying near the Harbour area - with the famous red buildings. So a change to do some architecture photography again. This is still something I love to do as it is very difficult and getting good compositions and light is always a challenge. Well the light was there … so the rest was on me I guess.

Never edited, never happened, an urbex trip to never forget

This blog post is a long time in the making. Or maybe more specifically a set of photos that are not edited and shared are never taken, right? I have these photos sitting on my hard disk for over 4-5 years now and sort of forgot about it until I “rediscovered” these. Wait, wait, I shot these in 2015, so even my memory is off. So time to share an epic urbex trip or as more commonly known urban exploring and also a reminder to revisit your photo library now and then.

The 15 minute observing challenge continues, birding in my local area

In the previous blog I wrote about observing, to recap here is the reason and intent. The last weeks I am starting to discover more birds in my area, especially directly in the area where I live. Meaning the first patch of green you will encounter when leaving the house. With the help of the Merlin Bird app, especially the sound recording feature - which is mind-blowing - I discovered more birds than I thought I would. Especially the Treecreeper and the Common redstart.

Birding extravaganza, a multi day birding break on Texel

To be honest I never really took notice of Texel for birding until I heard several podcasts and checked sightings on Texel and it seems (duh) that it's absolute heaven for migrating birds from and towards Scandinavia. So That needed to be checked out and boy I was in for a treat. I have never seen/spotted (the difference I will explain later) so many birds. Still it was quite a challenge to get proper photos as some birds were really far away.
